We have been a Training Practice for
over twenty years. Tom
Nicholson-Lailey took over as
Trainer from Tarrant Stein in 1995,
but the whole Team is involved in
training. Peter von Eichstorff
completed the New Trainers’ Course
in 2002. Peter and Tom will
alternate as trainers. Tony and
Sheena are in the process of
becoming trainers.
We serve a lively multicultural
community and are based on the
Cowley Road* close to the City
Centre. We are unique among
Oxfordshire Training Practices in
terms of the social, cultural and
ethnic mix of our patients,
approximately twenty per cent of
whom originate from Pakistan,
Bangladesh and India, with a further
twelve per cent of African-Caribbean
origin.
We work from a purpose built Health
Centre. Our Registrar has his/her
own consulting room.
We offer a full range of services –
including clinics for long term
conditions, asthma, diabetes, minor
surgery and child health
surveillance.
We work closely with the Community
Mental Health Team who hold a weekly
outpatient clinic at the Health
Centre. We also have links with the
Oxford Carers' Centre, which
regularly seconds a student to our
Practice.
A new EMIS LV computer system was
installed in October 2002. All
terminals are linked to the NHS Net,
Internet and Microsoft Outlook email
service. We have installed Scanagent
Workflow, and this combined with
Path and Lab links has enabled us to
move to a ‘paper light/noteless
practice’. In January 2004 we
established a clinical intranet. We
revamped our website at
www.Bartlemas.com in July 2006. We
accept email prescriptions, allow
online booking of appointments and
have a touch screen check in at the
surgery. Following our practice away
day in June 2006 we are
investigating Palm hand helds; in
particular for use by District
Nurses to facilitate patient care in
the home.
Out of hours experience is via the
Oxford City Out of Hours GP
Co-operative (OXEMS). Tom was
involved in setting up the Co-op in
1996 and sat on the Oxems board.
Peter von Eichstorff is
currently ‘GP LIFT Champion’ for the
Oxford City PCT and on the National
Lift Steering Group supporting the
building
programme in the city. He is also
clinical lead for the Oxford City
Practice
Based Commissioning Consortium. He
is also CHD lead for the City PCT.
Both Tom and Peter are NHS
Appraisers.
We have been pleased to welcome
Registrars from a wide variety of
clinical backgrounds. Experience and
teaching are tailored to fit the
needs of the Registrar. Day-release
to the Oxford VTS is for a full day
and there is a free half day each
week.
We would be happy to talk to
prospective Registrars on the phone
to provide further information, or
to arrange an informal visit if
wished.
